Garden Visiting In 2014

We've had some lovely days out this year, visiting a garden each month. Some were better than others, but on the whole, there was something to take away from each of the gardens.

I thought it would be helpful to list each of the gardens we visited with a link to the post about them.

January - Wentworth Garden Centre Gardens
February - Roundhay Park Gardens
March - Manor Heath Park, Halifax Part One
Manor Heath Park, Halifax Part Two
April - Lister Park, Bradford Part One
            Lister Park, Bradford Part Two
May - Cannon Hall Part One
           Cannon Hall Part Two
June - Golden Acre Park Gardens Part One
Golden Acre Park Gardens Part Two
July - Temple Newsam Walled Garden Part One
Temple Newsam Walled Garden Part Two
August - Yorkshire Lavender
September - Thornes Park, Wakefield
October - Oakwell Hall Part One
                Oakwell Hall Part Two
November - York Museum Gardens
December - Temple Newsam Gardens

I think my favourite garden of the ones visited this year was Cannon Hall. The walled garden was beautifully kept and had some wonderful, well labelled, plants and trees. We visited this garden in May but I'd like to go back a bit later in 2015 to see the apple and pear trees dripping in fruit and the vegetables ready to harvest.

Other gardens I would recommend visiting are Wentworth Garden Centre Gardens, Roundhay Park Gardens, Golden Acre Park Gardens and Temple Newsam Gardens, though all the ones I visited this year have something to offer.

I think it would be a nice idea to visit the gardens again in a different month as they can look so different at various times of the year when other plants are blooming.

I hope you've enjoyed my garden visits as much as I have.

  1. Most of those gardens are ones I'll probably never get to, so it's nice to visit them "by proxy". Your posts amply demonstrate that there are some lovely places around, if only you do a bit of research to find them. Is your own garden now fully stocked with flowers that bloom in every month of the year??

    1. The internet is brilliant for finding places you wouldn't really know about. Some of the plants I bought last year have sadly died. I expected it really as we have some cold weather here and not everything makes it, especially when it's planted in the ground and there's no way of protecting it. I think with any garden, we can always do with more plants, even though it's a case of finding room for them now.

  2. Thanks for this, Jo. Being local to me this list will be very useful.

    1. I hope you manage to visit some of the places on the list. It will be interesing to hear what you think of them yourself. Do try and visit Cannon Hall, the walled garden is fabulous, I'm sure you'd enjoy it.

  3. Oh you've certainly managed a good few garden visits this year Jo. As you suggest it would be rewarding to re-visit some of them at a different time of year so hopefully you will be able to do that in 2015. We shall find your summary useful if we find ourselves in your part of the country.

    1. I'm pleased with the number of gardens we've visited this year, certainly more than in previous years. It's no fun dragging moaning teens around when you're looking at plants but we're ok now they're older. We've got some lovely gardens over here across the Pennines so I hope you do manage a visit.

  5. I really enjoyed all these garden visit posts, and look forward to plenty more in 2015.
It''s interesting to see how we all seem to like walled gardens so much. Flighty xx

    1. I don't know what it is about walled gardens but they seem to be everyone's favourites. I love to see fruit trained up against the brickwork.

  6. I agree. I can always find a new idea for my modest plot from these visits. I would recommend Breezy Knees in June or September for next year.

    1. I've heard about Breezy Knees, it's on my list of gardens to visit. It's always good when a garden has a nursery attached so a few purchases can be made.

    2. That was the only downside; the list of plants I made while walking round were not to be found in the nursery. However I keep my list with me in the hopes of finding those plants.

    3. That's a shame, you'd think they'd stock the plants they have in the gardens. Surely more people than you will take a fancy to a plant they see while they're walking around and then want to purchase it there and then, I think they're missing a trick.

    4. We found the same at Breezy Knees - apparently they buy in the plants that are for sale

    5. It's a shame as I'm sure they'd make lots of sales if they had the same plants for sale as they have in their gardens.

  7. Thank you for your reminder of the gardens you visited this year. All the posts were very interesting. Wentworth Garden Centre we know well as it's the one nearest to us, but I was telling our daughter about Cannon Hall when we were out for our walk on Boxing Day which appeals to me as it's also fairly near, as does a revisit to the Museum Gardens in York. Hope you're having good weather so that you and the family can get out for walks just now.

    1. Wentworth Garden Centre is another garden I'd like to visit at a different time of year, I bet it's beautiful in summer. I love Cannon Hall, that's one we'll definitely revisit this year. It's bright today but bitterly cold, we had more snow last night and that's still hanging around.

  9. Yes that is a good idea. It is amazing how gardens change from one month to the next.
You are lucky to have so many gardens to visit.

We have sissinghurst (around ten minutes away) and Great Dixter about 30 minutes.
    I have not visited either.
    I know, crazy.

BUT I do visit private gardens.....we have a lot of open days locally and I love to see how the individual landscapes their space. There are many creative and wonderful gardeners in the UK.

    1. I'd love to visit both Sissinghurst and Great Dixter but I often overlook places which are close by and travel further afield when I'm looking for a day out. I love looking around private gardens, it's nice to see how people have tended their own little piece of land. It's true, there's some wonderful gardeners out there.

  13. What a list! We have only visited a handful of gardens this year, the most interesting of which was West Dean. I love their walled garden, it is so incredibly well kept. I should try to visit more gardens in 2015 - maybe I will make that one of my New Year's resolutions!
